I shouldn't be surprised by this. This is the same network that insisted on putting the word 'dead' in quotes, even as Uday and Qusay's bodies were laying on slabs. I suppose this makes Hitler "the late German President", and Mussolini "the former Italian military leader". Clearly, if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, the BBC must stop short of calling it anything but 'fowl'. Foul, indeed. From here on out, label me "the former BBC America viewer".
In their defense, they're probably culling their language to take anything more than factual information out of stories, and to try to take opinion completely out of it. In J-school, we were cautioned to prune our newswriting of opinion and "loaded" words, and "dictator" is a word that can definitely be loaded. So they probably are doing this in an attempt to be a truly impartial news source. Might be a little overboard, but still.
